Control where a payment method may be offered by matching the customer’s billing country and province/state.

Billing Zones define reusable geographic areas that payment rules can use when availability differs by customer billing location.
Billing Zones answer a narrow but important question: “Is this payment method allowed for the customer’s billing address?” They group countries and, optionally, specific provinces/states so the same geographic rule can be reused by more than one Payment Method.
They do not control shipping, tax or where TruCommerce sells. Those jobs belong to TruCommerce geography and Shipping & Tax Zones. A customer can therefore be in a valid shipping zone but still have fewer payment choices because of a TruPayments Billing Zone.
The zone has no customer-facing effect until it is assigned to a Payment Method. If a method has no Billing Zones, it has no billing-zone restriction from this feature. Gateway availability can still be affected by method status, currency support and the gateway itself.
Changing zone membership can immediately broaden or narrow which customers are offered a payment method. Deleting a zone removes that restriction from methods that referenced it; review those methods afterward so a previously restricted method does not unintentionally become unrestricted.
A Billing Zone is a named group of billing addresses. It is useful when a payment provider, merchant account, bank-transfer option or business policy should only be offered in certain countries or regions.
Billing Zones belong to TruPayments only. They do not define TruCommerce shipping destinations or tax areas; TruCommerce has its own Zones for those jobs.
| Zone setup | What it means at checkout |
|---|---|
| Country selected, no Provinces / States selected | The entire country belongs to the zone. |
| Country selected with one or more Provinces / States | Only those selected provinces/states in that country match the zone. |
| Payment Method has no Billing Zones | The payment method has no billing-zone restriction and can be available everywhere, subject to its other rules. |
| Payment Method has one or more Billing Zones | The payer’s billing address must match at least one of the selected zones. |
Example
If a bank-transfer method should be available only in Ontario, create a zone such as Canada - Ontario, add Canada, select Ontario under Provinces / States, then assign that zone to the bank-transfer Payment Method.
Deleting a zone can broaden availability
When a Billing Zone is deleted, TruPayments removes that zone from payment methods that reference it. If it was a method’s last billing-zone restriction, the method is no longer geographically restricted by Billing Zones. Review affected payment methods immediately after deletion.
| Field | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Zone Name | Use a staff-friendly name that describes the intended market or rule. |
| Country | Adds a country to the zone. |
| Provinces / States | Optionally narrows that country to selected subregions. Leave empty for the whole country. |
