Promotions are the discount engine.

Promotions define broader merchandising/discount rules that can affect qualifying purchases.

What this feature is for

Promotions are the discount rules; Coupons are the optional customer-entered codes that can activate or reference those rules. This separation lets you create automatic or code-driven discount logic without duplicating the commercial rule in multiple places.

A practical way to use it

Define the commercial rule first: who/what qualifies, discount value/type, dates and usage conditions.
Create the Promotion with those conditions.
Create/attach a Coupon when a customer must enter a code.
Test an eligible cart and an ineligible cart.
Monitor orders/usage and disable the campaign when it ends.

How it connects to other features

Coupons depend on Promotion rules. Product/category/cart conditions determine eligibility. The discounted total is then passed into tax/shipping/payment calculations according to the store’s configured order of operations.

What to expect after changes

Broad discount rules can apply to more carts than intended. Test scope, date windows and combination behavior before activating a promotion on a live store.

How Promotions work

A Promotion contains the actual eligibility rules and actions—such as fixed/percentage discount or free shipping—plus dates, priority, usage limits, exclusivity and coupon-based behavior. A Coupon can point customers to a promotion by code; the promotion still decides what the discount actually does.

Using the list page

Column	Use
Name	Shows the record name.
Coupon based	Shows the coupon based value recorded for each row.
Rules	Shows the rules value recorded for each row.
Actions	Contains the management actions available for the record.
Coupons	Shows the coupons value recorded for each row.

Name	The human-readable name used to identify this record.
Priority	Controls processing/display order when multiple applicable rules are present.
Usage Limit	Sets the maximum permitted uses when a limit is required.
Description	Longer descriptive information for this record.
Starts At	Sets when the promotion or record begins.
Ends At	Sets when the promotion or record stops applying.
Enabled	Turns this record/rule on or off without deleting its configuration.
Coupon based	Makes the promotion depend on a coupon rather than applying automatically when other rules match.
Exclusive	Prevents the promotion from being combined with other promotions when exclusivity is applied.
Applies to Discounted Items	Controls whether the promotion can also affect items that are already discounted.
