Tax Categories group products for tax treatment.

Tax Categories classify products for tax purposes before Tax Rates determine what percentage applies.
Tax Categories describe what kind of product is being taxed; Tax Rates describe how much tax applies in a geographic situation. Separating the two lets the same location have different treatment for standard, reduced, exempt or other product classes.
Products reference Tax Categories. Tax Rates combine category/geography/rate behavior. Store Settings decide whether taxes are enabled, what address basis is used and how prices are displayed.
Changing a product’s tax category can change checkout totals without changing its base price. Changing/deleting a category affects every product/rate that uses it.

A Tax Category groups products that should share a tax treatment. Assign the category on the Product, then configure Tax Rates and Store Settings tax basis/display behavior. The category alone does not create a tax amount without a matching rate/rule.
Use the tables below when you need the exact meaning of a field, column, filter or action. Read the workflow and dependency sections above first so each option is used in the right context.
