Shipping & Tax Zones

Group countries and provinces into reusable Shipping or Taxation areas so TruCommerce can apply the right checkout rules to a customer’s destination.

TruCommerce zones list

Zones group destinations into reusable shipping or taxation areas so checkout rules can be applied consistently.

What this feature is for

A TruCommerce Zone is a reusable geographic rule for either shipping or taxation. The Scope is not cosmetic: shipping-scoped zones are offered to Shipping Methods, while taxation-scoped zones are offered to Tax Rates. Building the correct scope first prevents rules from appearing in the wrong place—or not appearing at all.

Members can be whole Countries or individual Provinces. Use whole-country membership for rules that truly cover the country; use province membership when the rule differs within that country.

A practical way to use it

  1. Decide whether the business rule is for Shipping or Taxation.
  2. Create a Zone with that Scope and a name staff can recognize.
  3. Add Country members for whole-country coverage or Province members for narrower coverage.
  4. Assign a shipping-scoped zone to Shipping Methods, or a taxation-scoped zone to Tax Rates.
  5. Test checkout with an address inside the zone and one outside it.

How it connects to other features

Zones depend on Countries/Provinces. Shipping Methods read shipping-scope zones; Tax Rates read taxation-scope zones. Sales Channels can also reference billing/shipping zone concepts exposed by their configuration. These zones are separate from TruPayments Billing Zones.

What to expect after changes

Editing membership can immediately change which shipping method or tax rate matches a customer address. Deleting a zone that is still referenced can leave dependent rules ineffective, so review Shipping Methods/Tax Rates first.

What a Zone is for

A TruCommerce Zone is a reusable geographic group. Instead of adding the same countries or provinces separately to every shipping or tax rule, you define the geography once and then use that Zone where a shipping method or tax rate needs it.

For example, a store might create one Shipping Zone for the destinations it can deliver to, and separate Taxation Zones where different tax rules apply. The exact zones you need depend on where your business sells and how your tax/shipping policies are structured.

TruCommerce Zones and TruPayments Billing Zones are different.

TruCommerce Zones are used by store shipping and taxation. TruPayments Billing Zones control where a payment method may be offered. Changing one does not automatically change the other.

Where to find it

Open TruCommerce → Zones.

Choose the scope before adding members

Every Zone has a Scope. The scope tells TruCommerce what kind of rule the Zone is meant to support:

ScopeUse it forRelated configuration
ShippingDestinations that share a delivery rule, shipping method, or delivery availability.Shipping Methods
TaxationDestinations that share a tax rule.Tax Rates

Use separate zones when the same geography needs different business rules. A shipping area and a tax area may contain the same countries but still serve different purposes.

Countries and provinces inside a Zone

Under Zone Members, each row lets you choose a member type and then select the matching location. The available member types are Country and Province.

Countries and provinces come from Countries & Provinces. If the destination you need is missing, configure that location first and then return to the Zone.

Creating a Zone

  1. Open TruCommerce → Zones and click Create.
  2. Enter a Name that describes the business rule, not just the geography. Names such as “Domestic Shipping” or “Regional Tax” are easier to recognize later than a vague “Zone 1.”
  3. Select Shipping or Taxation as the Scope.
  4. Under Zone Members, choose Country or Province for each location you want to include.
  5. Click Save.
  6. Continue to the related Shipping Method or Tax Rate and assign/use the new zone there.

Configure geography before pricing/rates.

A practical setup order is Countries & Provinces → Zones → Shipping Methods and Tax Rates → test checkout with addresses inside and outside each zone.

Understanding the Zones list

The list is primarily a maintenance screen. Use Search and Filter to find a Zone by its name or scope, then use the row actions to inspect or change it.

Column / actionHow it helps
NameIdentifies the geographic rule set. Use descriptive names so staff can choose the correct zone later in shipping/tax configuration.
StatusThis column is present in the shared list layout, but Zones do not provide an enable/disable control on their form. Manage whether a zone has an effect through the shipping or tax rule that uses it.
ViewOpens the stored Zone details when you need to inspect the record.
EditChanges the name, scope, or geographic members.
DeleteRemoves the Zone. Review related shipping methods or tax rates first so you do not leave a store rule without the geography it expects.

Field reference

FieldWhat to enterWhy it matters
NameA clear internal name for the Zone. This is what administrators recognize when connecting geography to other commerce rules.
ScopeShipping or Taxation.Determines the kind of commerce rule the Zone is intended to support.
Zone Members — Select TypeCountry or Province.Sets the geographic level for that member row.

What happens when you edit a Zone

Changing the members changes the geography represented by the Zone. If a Shipping Method or Tax Rate uses that Zone, the destinations affected by that rule can therefore change without you editing the shipping method or tax rate itself.

Test checkout after changing zone membership.

Use representative delivery/billing addresses from inside and outside the edited area. A small geographic change can affect whether shipping is offered or which tax rule applies.

How Zones relate to Channels

Channels also expose geographic fields. A Channel can reference a Shipping Zone, so a Shipping-scope Zone may appear there as part of a selling context. The Channel form also has a Billing Zone selector; however, the TruCommerce Zones form offers only Shipping and Taxation scopes, so administrators normally create and manage the zones needed for shipping and tax from this page.
