Footer Layouts & Backgrounds

The footer closes every page. Theme Options give you nine widget layouts, three kinds of background (solid, gradient or picture), twelve decorative top-edge shapes and a copyright bar, so a footer can be anything from a quiet line of text to a rich branded section.

Appearance → Theme Options → Footer. Layouts, gradients and shapes are chosen by clicking miniature previews.

The footer has three layers that you can control independently:

LayerWhat it isWhere you set it
Widget areaThe main part of the footer. Its content comes from the widgets you place in Footer Area 1–4 in Widgets. The layout decides how those areas are arranged.Footer Widgets, Footer Columns and Widgets layout
Background and edgeThe colour, gradient or picture behind the footer, plus an optional decorative shape along its top edge. Background type, gradient and image options, Top edge shape
Copyright barA slim bottom strip with the copyright text, an optional footer menu and an optional language switch.Copyright Bar, Copyright Text, Footer Menu, Language Switch, Copyright bar width

Open Appearance → Theme Options and select the Footer tab. Option groups appear or disappear depending on your choices, for example gradient options only show when the background type is Gradient.

Footer widgets and columns

OptionWhat it does
Footer WidgetsSwitch on to show the widget area. When off, only the copyright bar is shown.
Footer ColumnsHow many widget areas the footer shows. The footer has four widget areas (Footer Area 1–4), so up to four columns are displayed. Fill the same number of areas in Widgets.
Widgets layoutHow the widget areas are arranged. See the nine layouts below.

The nine widget layouts

Pick a layout by clicking its miniature. The examples below use the same four widgets arranged differently.

Equal columns

Equal columns footer layout

Widgets layout: Equal columns.

Every widget area gets the same width in a single row. The simplest and most flexible arrangement.

Wide first column

Wide first column footer layout

Widgets layout: Wide first column.

The first column is wider than the others — ideal for a logo, a short description and social links beside link columns.

Centered

Centered footer layout

Widgets layout: Centered.

Widgets are stacked and centred, one beneath the other. Suits minimal sites with short content.

Banner above columns footer layout

Widgets layout: Banner above columns.

The first widget spans the full width as a banner (a newsletter, a call to action or a large statement); the rest sit in columns below it.

Wide last column

Wide last column footer layout

Widgets layout: Wide last column.

The last column is the wide one, for example a contact or newsletter block after link lists.

Two by two

Two by two footer layout

Widgets layout: Two by two.

Widgets are arranged in a grid of two columns and two rows.

Lead with stacked sidebar

Boxed columns

Each column sits in its own softly tinted rounded box.

Ruled columns

Widgets layout: Ruled columns.

Columns are separated by thin vertical rules for an editorial, tidy look.

Footer background

Background type chooses what fills the footer.

TypeDescriptionOptions that appear
Solid colorOne flat colour. The default.Footer background
GradientA smooth blend between two colours, or one of nine ready-made presets.Gradient preset, and for Your colors: Gradient start, Gradient end and Gradient style
ImageA picture behind the footer with an optional dark overlay so text stays readable. Background image, Image position, Image size, Image repeat, Overlay color and Overlay opacity

The background colour still matters

Even with a gradient or an image the Footer background colour tints the copyright bar and shows while a picture loads, so keep it close to the look you choose.

Gradient presets

Choose Your colors to define your own gradient, or click one of nine presets: Brand (built from your primary colour), Aurora, Sunset, Ocean, Midnight, Forest, Ember, Orchid and Graphite. Presets are complete backgrounds, so they ignore your custom gradient colours; all of them are dark enough for the footer’s light text.

Brand footer gradient

Gradient preset: Brand.

Aurora footer gradient

Gradient preset: Aurora.

Sunset footer gradient

Gradient preset: Sunset.

Ocean footer gradient

Gradient preset: Ocean.

Midnight footer gradient

Gradient preset: Midnight.

Ember footer gradient

Gradient preset: Ember.

Orchid footer gradient

Gradient preset: Orchid.

Graphite footer gradient

Gradient preset: Graphite.

Your own gradient

OptionWhat it does
Gradient start / Gradient endThe two colours of the gradient. For the glow styles, the start colour is the colour of the glow and the end colour is what it fades into.
Gradient styleTop to bottom, Left to right, Diagonal, Glow from the top or Glow from the top left corner. The glow styles start with a soft spot of the start colour that fades into the end colour.

Image background

OptionWhat it does
Background imageUpload or choose a picture (.jpg, .jpeg, .png, .webp or .avif, up to 5 MB). Until one is chosen the footer keeps its background colour.
Image positionWhich part of the picture stays in view when the footer is cropped: Center, Top center, Bottom center, Left center or Right center.
Image sizeCover fills the footer; Contain shows the whole picture; Original size keeps its own dimensions (use with a repeat for patterns).
Image repeatNo repeat, Repeat, Repeat horizontally or Repeat vertically. Tiling is meant for small patterns.
Overlay color / Overlay opacityA colour laid over the picture so the text stays readable (opacity 0 shows the picture as it is, 1 hides it).

Keep text readable

Photographs need an overlay. Start with a black overlay at 60% opacity and adjust until the footer text and links are comfortable to read.

Top-edge shapes

A shape adds a decorative profile along the top edge of the footer: a skyline, hills, torn paper and more. It overlaps the bottom of the page content, which makes the footer feel connected to the page instead of starting in a straight line. Choose Flat edge (the default) for no shape. Top edge shape size sets its height — Small, Medium or Large — and it scales down automatically on small screens.
